Tl;dr: Roald Dahl originally wrote Charlie as a young black child, but changed him to white at the prodding of his agent. Roald Dahl's widow, Felicity, expressed support for an interviewers suggestion of an edit to the book that recast Charlie's race. Thought this would be interesting, since race-bending (and other similar changes) usually is done for modern soceity's sensibilities and not the author's. Id be down for it tbh.
