Like by all acceptable societal standards having sex with someone requires consent, if it's not that's just simply rape. They seem like redundant phrases. Is it just people wanting to PG it down and not use the word "rape"? Because that's doesn't make any sense, sex is an inherently mature subject anyways so if you're to a point where it's being discussed you're to a point where you can use the word rape and when discussing an act as serious as rape it should be a serious word that gets a gutteral response from you. Using phrases like "nonconsentual sex" just seems like an attempt to remove the magnitude when speaking of the act like it would had you just said "rape".

From what I understand, there is a cohort of people who feel that rape should have a narrow definition and that the growing trend of calling all non-consensual sex as rape is something bad.

I think the problem is most people associate the word "rape" with a very violent act involving physical violence and forced penetration. The problem arises when these cases are a very small minority of all "rape" cases.

because two drunk people at a party hooking up is not even in the same universe as a guy knocking a girl out to have sex with her but according to the definition they're both labeled with the same term.

I mean I agree that there's varying degrees of rape but still rape has a very narrow and clear meaning, sexual activity without consent is rape.
You can argue the morality of fucking a drunk passed out chick vs like grabbing someone, threatening them, and violently raping them but at the end of the day they're both still rape and rape is rape. It's an abhorrent, inexcusable act.

"nonconsentual sex" isn't a phrase that needs to exist because it's simply rape, and "consentual sex" isn't a phrase that needs to exist either because in any developed society that should just mean sex.
