I typically miss like 5 times with the crossbow before my presence is noticed

With 2 or 3 more shots I may be able to kill somethin

6 is pretty good aside from cast bloat and forcing split party sections. I wouldn't mind the latter as much if it didn't mean I was stuck with several characters I don't care about

FF6 is definitely top 5 in the series for me. I love the unique character abilities in battle like Edgar's tools. And the story/characters are a lot of fun for the most part.

Mid-tier for the series sounds about right. I enjoyed both the WoB and WoR. The cast has some prominent duds, but that's not surprising in a cast that size, and there are others who I like pretty well (Locke, Sabin).

6 was the first one I really got into. I was probably just too young when I initially played 1 and 4. But I loved 6 from the very start. Then when I played 7 I liked it but it didn't quite have the same charm. Then I didn't play any others until 10 and it had a lot more going for it than 7 but still wasn't on the level of 6. And I haven't played any others released since then

Me personally, FFVI is upper mid tier. Probably around the edge of the top 5. I guess that means I like enough Final Fantasy games that it's not the best, but don't like enough of em that it's soundly in the middle

Seems about right. I think this is enough evidence. Theory is sound.

Really though, this isn't even a joke the more I think about it. It actually kinda makes a lot of sense to me.

FF6 is probably one of the most casual friendly FF games in terms of the mechanics, presentation, etc-- like honestly I always felt it was more casual than FF7, even though FF7 was "that mainstream one." I actually had non-RPG enthusiast friends playing (keep in mind playing doesn't mean beating) FF6 back in the day, more than FF7 had-- I think more were introduced to the series by FF7, in that FF6 didn't keep em around, but I feel like in terms of out of place randoms playing it, FF6 won out. Maybe that's just me though.

But it has always kinda feels like the game that not many are passionate about but is generally well liked-- I mean you can even see this when discussing just SNES RPGs. Chrono Trigger almost always gets more talk, and hell even friggin Earthbound of all things tends to get more it seems. FF6 just doesn't have enough indie cred or something. Every big fan of the series will tend to cling to one of the other ones.

So the point is, if you dislike most of em, suddenly "generally well liked" will rise to the top. We need some market research here.

It really depends what you consider "Final Fantasy", since I think FF beyond say... 7 is such a different entity to FFs 1-7, and they really starting shaking things up with from there. Exception being 9.... which is probably why it joins into my list of FFs I care for, and why I love Bravely Default so much because it's so much more inline with "traditional" FF.

Expanding a little bit, 6 and 7 were like the sweet spot transition between retro FF and modern FF for me. Pre-6 I really don't care much about the characters, but Post-7 I stop having fun with the games.

I don't really see how 8 is less traditional than 7 to be honest. Like I don't even know what tangible distinction you'd make there. I feel like you draw the line after 10, after 6, or after 5 (including 9 with either of the latter two-- moreso if you draw the line between 5 and 6) for "retro" vs "modern." No other place to put that line really makes sense to me.

The Junction system is the only thing that really makes FFVIII "non-traditional." It's a straightforward JRPG in pretty much every other way.

I agree, but I think it's a noteworthy departure to a more "experimental" kind of Final Fantasy that the series is today.

Those 3 lines being based on

1-5 + 9 - Style. Mostly setting. Lot more machines and modern elements in the other ones. They're also less whimsical and more srs bizniz in general.
1-6 (+9) - Style. Presentation. Basically NES-SNES era RPGs + 9 being optional if the poseur sells you. Characters lookin like little dudes matters to you I guess.
1-10 - Gameplay. After this you start really veering off the typical turn based systems. A lot of experimentation.

I personally put the line at 10 but I kinda accept it at 5 or 6.

also the FFVIII battle system felt pretty different to me, since I was constantly summoning GFs (and thought combat was pretty boring because of it), but I later learned that the FFVIII pros don't do it that way -- junction properly and your attacks are much more efficient than summoning. so I am chalking that one up to me being bad at the game rather than a flaw with the game.

Eh, I don't think it was even that experimental or radical. It forces you to handle some things differently than other games in the series, but eh, every game has stuff like that. It didn't start getting really different until after FFX.

Yeah, drawing tons of spells and spamming GFs are for rookies.

Playing cards, refining everything, and breaking the system as soon as possible is the way to go.

I think I summoned like twice among all my playthroughs of FFVIII and they seemed weak-- it's weird that that would be a logical end to me.

I did draw like 800 times though on my first failed playthough. So I did hate it until I read what the refiner skills did on a later playthrough.

I guess it had a bit more of a learning curve in that like, poorly optimized characters sucked a lot more than they would in some earlier games, but that's just FF8 being FF8. Arguably FF5 and FF2 would have the same problem relative to other games.

FFVI and FFVII are definitely the "transition games" for the series, but that's mostly in terms of style, tone, and emphasis on story over gameplay. The drastic shift in the gameplay itself doesn't really occur until after FFX.

FF6->7 being a disconnect doesn't really work for me but it does enough that I understand where people are coming from.

7->8 feels more like the core of the issue is "I didn't like FF8 or FF10" than any sort of real shift existing. Just not liking a game or games is fine-- hell with FF8 you have a lot of company.

tbqh my 8 as a transition is partially based on Leon having an affinity that crosses the FF-shift, not so much my own feelings on the game because I don't really much.

that plus 9 always being hailed as a "retro" styled PS FF, since I already group 7 with 6 that only leaves 8 as the "different" one.

I never really took to 6. 7 is my favourite game ever. I played 7 first, then either 8 or 6 I forget but I think I remember 6 being a lot like 7 but inferior in every way. It's been like 20 years so maybe I forget why I didn't like it. I don't actively dislike it as such it just does nothing for me. It's solidly in the meh tier of games. It's better than 12 and 13.
