I had some fun, I ended up finding some witch at a well and getting my ass kicked because she was higher level than me (I was doing a few sidequests before i killed the first big monster).

i still don't have any clue what I'm doing as far as making potions and shit like that

If you're on PC, you're gonna need a controller.

About potions. Something I didn't know (because I don't read tutorials most of the time) is that once you learn to craft a new potion you can set it to your inventory and it auto refills on resting. So find a good one and keep it equipped so you can use it often.

I thought that it was like most games where you craft one and you use one, then you gotta farm resources to craft another to use, rinse / repeat. It's not though, you just farm the resources once and learn how to craft it once and it's yours forever.

Literally played through the game twice before realising it. I just never bothered trying to craft potions because I didn't want to have to farm all the time.

-find out if you like gwent or not early on and either go all in or not bother with them at all since there are a ton of cards to collect from the moment you start out and a bunch of quests(tournaments) to complete throughout.

totally worth it for the fun factor alone btw.

-collect everything that isn't junk(though junk can still be broken down to materials) as well as collect as much money as possible since you'll need A L O T of both for the best stuff in the late game. either sell most non-rare equipment or break them down if you get something rare out of it.

-the game is so fucking big(especially with expansions) that you might not want a 2nd run ever again and should decide which ending you wanna go and meet the requirements for. there are also points of no return but nothing too bad really unless you're a card collector iirc.

never go out of your way to collect but do them if they're on your path. some you should collect early on are the ones underwater. otherwise you can always look up online where to buy missing plants.
