as in "don't take [so-and-so medication] if you're allergic to it"

does that not go without saying? how stupid are people?

is this just an american thing (same with how bags of chips, for example, have to disclaim that the picture is enlarged for texture or whatever)?

Liability. If they don't disclose the possible problem and someone suffers they could be liable for damages.

Liability.

I can't stand prescription drug commercials. "Ask your doctor if you should take drug X." My doctor has my medical history, knows my allergies, if he needs my advice on what drug to take I'm finding a smarter doctor.

People are that stupid. Then people sue. Then people get accused of being heartless human beings if we expect people not to be that stupid so they win.

Therefore various don't be an idiot warnings.

Always assume some regulatory bullshit, before assuming CYA bullshit. It's usually a combination of both, though.

It's only CYA level now because some people got away with it and it sets legal precedent. Now I have to be warned not to use the hair drier in the shower, that the toilet brush is not to be used orally, and (my favorite) the curling iron is for external use only.

Don't forget NOT to take your Prep H orally. That's always a fun one.
