Fake news.

Still says $999 on Apple's site

Probably just BB marking up the price from MSRP because they know initial demand will far exceed the supply

I got a Samsung Galaxy J7 it cost me 220$. The camera is about the same quality as everything else on the market and I don't really play games on my phone because lolphonegaming.

I realized I don't need anything "high tech" because...no one really does? Like what are you really going to do on a phone that requires the most modern technology? A 1000$ emoji machine? Yeah, that's just fucking stupid.

Only downside to the J7 is it only has 16 gb internal memory, but it does have expandable so I got a 64gb SD card for all my vidoes/pictures

Not trying to defend the price or anything, but there's a huge worldwide NAND shortage right now, and it's primarily caused by the iPhone X (and the Note 7 recall). 3D NAND is still in it's infancy and costs a lot right now. It got so bad that Samsung had to step in to help.

So I can see them not being so generous with such an expensive phone. Something like that should be at least 128 GB if not 256 GB.

This whole iPhone X is likely just a sneak peek at the next line of iPhones. The manufacturing of the phone has shaken the entire industry and they know people have gotten bored of the current look. So they're subsidizing it with early adopters. Then next year, same phone will start at $650 with some "S" type upgrades.

Good thing is that the industry is heading towards oversupplying to compensate for these shortages (like the GDDR shortage) and we should see electronics in general hit dirt low prices throughout 2018/2019.

I get like 90% of my my music through Spotify, but the thing is that I don't want to pay for unlimited data to stream all the time, so I use Spotify's download feature to listen to lots of music from there offline. This all contributes to the app taking up more space on my phone but I manage it pretty well

Seems odd that other companies can sell the same technology at a third of the price and still make a hefty profit then.

They up sell phones because they can because the demand is so high. There's no reason for a phone to cost more than a top of the line computer.

But it's not an Apple thing. Sure, there's always a slight premium with them, but the costs are pretty much the same for the same level of mobile technology.

The cheaper stuff you're getting are in fact cheaper. I buy from all ranges and all companies, and there are definitely differences. The issue is that things have plateued, so to the normal person, it all looks and functions the same. I do not think that many people are upgrading their phones as often as people might think. Lots of people have been keeping their phones till the battery dies.

There's just so many people that there will always be enough early adopters and people up for a new phone every year to make it look like everybody is mindlessly upgrading.

Most of my friends are still on the iPhone 6 or Note 5/S5 and are still content, save for those with batteries that have gone bad.

Also, as mentioned before, the iPhone X is likely this expensive because of the various tech shortages.

No, he's completely right. There is zero defensible reason for why phone prices keep increasing at this rate despite functionality remaining relatively flat. In most other markets where there are rational (i.e. non-sheep) consumers, the prices for smartphones would be trending down.

It's also quite the marketing gimmick that people think they need new phones every 1-2 years. If any other high-end tech purchase needed replacement that often, we'd universally agree it was a piece of shit. At this level of smartphone stagnation, phones should be lasting 4-5 years. Same as most computers.

Companies selling $300 phones arent selling the same technology. They're selling similar but older/slower/etc technology. Is it "enough" for most people? Well yeah. That's why some company exists doing that. But it shows a fundamental misunderstanding of cell phone technology to say its the same tech and Apple(or Samsung, or whoever) is just marking up cheap tech. Apple makes hefty margins, but it doesnt mean the phones arent still expensive to produce.

When it's inflated by market factors like scarcity? No.

But at $650-$750? Yes, because newer technology is always more expensive, even if marginal. This is the same with computers. They get subsidized by the early adopters, which then help those components flow downwards to the mid range and low budget levels and lower the prices of the current ones over the year. The iPhone 7 and even the Galaxy S8 have hit $300-$400 several times already.

This applies to the X too. It'll likely become much cheaper next by September as the shortages are ironed out.

Phone pricing is continuing to go down outside of flagship class devices. A $180 Moto G is better than $600+ flagships from 2014, and on par with the "tier 2"($400-$500) devices from 2015/2016. Hell, even comparing to current flagships the only "features" that really haven't trickled down to budget devices is 1440p AMOLED screens and camera quality. The idea that phones are suddenly racing up in price despite complete stagnation is a complete kneejerk reaction to Samsung and Apple trying to improve their margins by making "premium" phones that dominate headlines. The ONLY people who have to spend more on a phone today than they did in the past are the corporate ball washers who line up to pre-order the most expensive phone from their chosen company every single year. For any reasonable consumer, there has never been a time where you could get as much for your money as you can right now.

There is no straight comparison between an iPhone and what else is out there. The hardware may reflect an older standard but APIs and software infrastructure can be made to work around those shortcomings.

To be honest that's the only thing holding Apple from a tech point of view...they still manage to make a cheap phone function as it it wasn't so cheap

If Apple made a phone that ran on human blood and drained a liter or so from the user daily, as well as draining spinal fluid to be able to use headphones and required a chip to be implanted in the brain that literally transferred every thought the user has to apple, and the starting price was $5k, it would be sold out a year before being even announced.
