They're terrible. They scream "this show sucks, so we'll 'herd mentality' you into laughing along!"

Black Books and IT Crowd disagree.

Laugh tracks are padding for lazy television producers. There is no reason for them to exist on any show anymore.

read what I said. it does give at least that. i've actually missed dialogue in shows that didn't have them because I or someone in the room was laughing. other than that though, it does make the show look awkward as you have the actors standing around just staring at each other

It isn't done for that narrow and easily-fixed-by-other-means reason. With a laugh track you can write far less jokes in every scene because you've got the set up *laugh track* the joke *laugh track* the reaction *laugh track*. It also makes shows less funny because the need for a laugh track makes it so the writers cannot put as many jokes into a scene and have it flow one into the other uninterrupted. They have to pause for that laugh track. A show without a laugh track like Arrested Development, for example, could never have had a laugh track at all. Everything in the show goes so quickly that there's just no time for it. And it's funnier because of it.

They are usually bad and a sign of bad writing

This. Always makes me think of that vid of big bang theory without laugh tracks...

Big Bang Theory does overuse laugh tracks, but that video is also a bad example. Timing is also an important part of humor. When the people who made that video removed the laugh tracks, they didn't just remove the laughs, they removed time and put all the timing off.

They didn't remove the time lol. By removing the laugh track it shows certain people who might not otherwise realize it how stilted and unnatural the comedy of that show really is.

Same thing happens to any comedy that is paced with time for the laughter, not just bbt, wah wah etc

I don't recall any situation comedies without a laugh track pausing and basking in laughter all the time.

I also hate when they cheer for random people. Happened a few times on Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. Might have spelled the last bit wrong but screw it.

Being able to react without missing anything is an underrated benefit, especially if you're watching with other people. You can pack more content without a laugh track, but if you take too long to enjoy a joke you may be left asking what happened directly after that. Or rewinding every once in a while, which isn't an ideal way to enjoy a show.

A good comedy writer knows how to write a show like this without a laugh track.

Terrible. Either film in front of a live studio audience, or ditch the concept of adding laughter altogether.

What

trump showed up on fresh prince once and carlton or however you spell his name started fanboying. think it had something to do with carlton loves being rich and trump was/is like the posterboy for being rich

They're just a part of TV and if anything they're a good test of how funny the show actually is-take the laugh track of most sitcoms and they're actually pretty crap, it's just considered good because the dumber audience members are following their cue and feel like they've been entertained.
