I've seen guernica in the flesh, it's much bigger than I thought it would be. Like 8 metres across. I use picasso as an example when I'm trying to people explain the difference between deliberately rejecting convention as opposed to just being a talentless hack.

I read he was a bit of a jerk and a showpony but I guess that's to be expected of a famous artist.

Guernica is probably my favorite painting by anyone.

I used to use Jackson Pollock as an example, but idk if he ever attempted to paint conventionally

but yea, Picasso was already masterful in his art at an early age, and could have been content with it, so I appreciated his challenging himself with other styles

Yeah. Picasso did the cubic stuff because he was so good at traditional stuff that he got bored.

This is basically what happens with high fashion designers and the conversation I end up having with people when they say something (understandably) like "they're just in a competition to see who can design the weirdest shit".

Because nobody wants to go to a catwalk show and watch the same generic menswear walk up and down for 20 years.

We actually sold some Picassos at our art gallery. There is one we had that we were offering for $24 million. Seeing them in person is fascinating. I was never a true Picasso fan but I would be interested in reading more in depth about his life and work.

I do know that he went to those traditonal art academies so he was indeed proficient at realistic style of drawing and painting.

Yep. Art is a lot like music. Sure, anyone can pick up an instrument, but the people who reach the top are generally the ones who attend classical conservatories and study the theory under great masters. It's all very academic and rigid.

thanks.

I was thinking about it more like an art school that you might see nowadays than something like Juilliard

You needed a recommendation from a master in order to take the entance exam to an academy like L'Ecole des Beaux Arts. You had to also demonstrate talent to get admitted to the master's studio as well.

Today, new academies in a similar vein and tradition have popped up in the past 10 years.
