It's a numbers game. Eventually someone somewhere or some group will get through and you'll have a massive 9/11 scale attack again. It might not be for 10 or 20 years but it's going to happen.

What do you think will happen to the American way of life when it does, especially if Trump is in office? Things like privacy, civil liberties etc. What do you think America will do to itself in the wake of the proverbial 9/12?

i think one day, something is going to happen to the country and america won't be able to exist as we know it anymore. it could be terrorism, or something else entirely.

240+ years is a good run, but no world superpower lasts forever. just the way of life.

240 Years is an impressive run when compared to historical superpowers. Especially if you consider the rate of advance in those years. What will be the downfall of the United States empire? Internal conflict.

Eh, it's likely especially as technology increases and "rogue nations" are developing nuclear technology.

One lone terrorist detonating a sufficiently powerful dirty bomb could leave part of a major city uninhabitable for years. Imagine if downtown New York was suddenly a radiated no-go zone with a twenty year clean up plan? The economy damage would be terrifying.

I mean that's exactly it. The real threat is not terrorist with box cutters but a highly technologically weaponized government that will use those thin excuses to expand its power beyond all reasonable justification.

I don't see it being likely. The effects of 9/11 on national security are still strong, and I can't see that going away until Islamic terrorism and Middle Eastern conflict in general are a thing of the past. Our guard would need to go down and people would need to push for lax regulations, then we would be vulnerable again.

We weren't a superpower for 240 years though.

Our civil liberties, our constitutional rights, like the Fourth Amendment which protects us from unreasonable search and seizure.

Of course, things like the PATRIOT ACT that happened after 9/11 already have infringed on these rights. The TC is alluding to the fact that another attack could make it even worse.

it absolutely could. thats the danger of the PA. not how its used now, but how it will in the future.

the war on drugs is the perfect example.
