Could also have been a parody of the ancient Egyptian myth of Osiris and Horus.

One could also think of the formulation of Christian mythology of the centuries (most of it was written long after Jesus's death) in the same way as a friend of mine once described Dragonball Z: The creators are just trying to see how ridiculous and inane they can get before their fans will call "bull shit!" (answer for both DBZ and Christianity: there is no such limit to the fans' suspension of disbelief)
