End of Evangelion is legitimately one of the most depressing things I've ever seen. Watched it for the first time earlier this year when I was in a really bad place and it just connected with me in a way that very few things have. Definitely one of the most relatable things I've ever seen. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite as 'heavy' and depressing as EoE in the sense that there's very little uplifting about it.

I would totally have stayed in Instrumentality if I were Shinji. I see absolutely no downside to it.

Bojack Horseman is another show that hits me pretty hard but it's also a comedy so most of the time, it's amusing, but there is a lot of human drama with legitimately flawed, broken characters and these interactions carry a lot of emotional weight not entirely unlike NGE.

i feel you. I don't know why I continued to watch it after I realized where it was going and given the mental state I'm in. It connected with me in the worst possible way.

It's almost oppressively depressing. From the very beginning, there's this forboding, ominous sense of shit going wrong and it just continues to get worse from there.

But even if it's depressing, it's so realistic in its depiction of mental issues and insecurities, their impact on human relationships, and how people might cope with their issues. There's a lot of truth in it.

I think that's what makes it so bad for me. The fact that it's too real. No piece of media has ever made me feel so fuckin awful in my life.

Do you think watching the rebuilds would help?

FLCL is a great pallet cleanser. It's what Studio Gainax went on to make after Eva, and the result is a crazy, cathartic, awesome coming-of-age story with significantly less despair than the one preceding it.

And the music is so good. So, so good.
