It has a very complicated and long rotation compared to BLM and RDM, who both can put out respectable damage without nearly as much effort (RDM also has much more utility than SMN). And if you ever die in the fight, there goes about two minutes worth of burst because your dreadwyrm aether reset. It's by no means horrible damage wise, only bads think that. In terms of caster DPS it's second highest, it's just a chore to play now.
