When I was a kid she was always excited to see me. She always sat in this one spot in her house and I still remember her voice

Years later she developed dementia and never recognized me. I have never been so scared of a mental illness in my entire life and seeing it happen in person is devastating. She would always ask "who is he" every time I came through the door. It's sad seeing that person you knew completely gone because they don't remember shit.

Alright, done with the depressing post, but two things:

1) Dementia sucks
2) Tell your grandparents or great grandparents that you love them. Grandparents on both sides of my family are all officially gone now :(

My grandma died yesterday.

Never knew my great grandparents on either side, so that's cool you got to know her

She passed what? A kidney stone? A driving test?

My grandpa has dementia.
Fuck dementia, it's even worse than cancer. At least with cancer you still get to remember shit.

My grandmother had dementia, she didn't recognize me for the last 2 - 3 years of her life. In fact I think she even got to the point she didn't recognize her own kids. Kind of scary to go out like that.

My grandfather is the only grandparent I have left now. He just got a pacemaker, but other then that he is still in really good health especially for a 91 year old man. I mean he lives in an apartment off of my dad's house, but for the most part he is still self sufficient. He only really needs help with lifting heavy things and technology.

You worship Jesus but post something so stupid... excellent example of your kind. Would've expected a more comforting post, not nonsense

Yeah maybe I exaggerated a bit but it's still up there with horrible diseases like cancer IMO.

Still, a person with dementia is essentially an empty husk of its former self.
It doesn't feel like a life worth living if you can't understand or remember anything anymore and you're just walking around like a zombie.

I mean, when I'm on my deathbed, I'd like to think back on all the good times I've had with my friends and family before I eventually die.

Yea, that makes more sense. I really don't want it either for the exact same reason

I'm sorry about that. My condolences...

My great grandmother passed away 5 years ago. She had dementia too. She stopped recognising my mum and my grandmother. It was so....sad and heartrending.

I still have my grandmothers though and am also trying my best to spend time with them however I can yearly. My mum always makes sure to fly over during her birthdays as she always fears that it may be her last....
