It not only has many motifs and allusions to Trigger, but goes ten steps beyond to create a soundtrack that's so ephemeral and otherworldly, like I just shut my eyes and can get so easily lost in it. As a kid, I didn't really care for any of it because it wasn't as big and brassy as the Final Fantasy (or even Xenogears) soundtracks. The combination of the music and all that build-up to actually getting in, then standing on the edge and looking out over the frozen waves and destroyed civilization was one of the most powerfully atmospheric moments in video games for me. I'll never forget it. Then traversing the place with that feeling of 'I'm really not supposed to be here' that I feel the game was so good at establishing.
