Punk, easily.

And when I say punk, I don't mean garbage like Green Day and Blink 182.

Punk is an abomination, and is a much narrower genre than Metal. there are so many different kinds of Metal, it is mind boggling. one can be into one kind of metal without being into 5 others. not true with Punk. you're pretty much either into Punk or not.

This pretty much sums it up .

IMO both blink and green day get passes based on the merit of their early material

There's just as much variation in punk as in metal.

Everything from the Sex Pistols to Descendents to TSOL, Texas is the Reason to Moss Icon, Fugazi to Streetlight Manifesto, etc. It's all considered punk and it all sounds unique.

lolno. metal subgenres are so complex and branching that it's become a meme. punk may have some variance, but nowhere near the amount that metal does.

i googled these bands and some of them are emo, hardcore, post-hardcore. that's not punk. good job trying to over-represent your position though.

Emo, hardcore, and post-hardcore are all subgenres of punk, much in the same way that grindcore, doom, metalcore, prog metal, etc. are subgenres of metal.

But if I had to pick one, I'd go with punk since I couldn't live without ever hearing Death Church and Detestation again.

But really, the best metal and best punk both draw on each other.

i know exactly what i'm talking about though

the difference is someone who is into emo but not punk rock will never call themselves a punk rocker, they will call themselves an emokid or a scene kid. on the flipside, it doesn't matter what subgenre(s) of metal you are into, you're a metalhead in any case.

You clearly don't even know what Emo is if you equate it to scene kids.

well to be fair scene kids is what former emokids started to call themselves once the emo craze started to die off and they had to find another hip trend to follow, so yeah they aren't technically equatable

but anyway that is dodging the point of my post

You have the complete wrong idea about what emo is.

i know exactly what emo is. i'm talking about the mainstream popularity of it in the 2000s specifically. i thought that would be apparent by the usage of the word "craze".

If you're talking about stuff like Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Taking Back Sunday, etc. I personally wouldn't really consider that emo, in the same way that I wouldn't consider something like disturbed or five finger death punch to be metal. Maybe my definitions are too purist but I stand by them.

My favorite emo album is Pinkerton by Weezer. That being said, if you were to ask me in high school I would have chose punk, but nowadays I find myself listening to more and more metal instead. It doesn't help that the local punk scene is filled with terrible bands who all sound the same save for a few.

Pretty much. Punk's main musical divisions are Pop, Hardcore, and Skate. And the hardcore stuff can easily devolve into some drug addict screaming incoherently into a mic and then trying to rape someone. Yes really. Look up GG Alin. Guy was insane. Most of the other divisions are along philosophical lines, whether they sing for communism, or environmentalism.

Been a punk fan since the mid 80's, and never stopped. I've liked some metal, but find a lot of it lyrically mindless. To be fair, not a big fan of The Misfits either, which is considered punk, but I don't care to listen to music about horror and zombies and shit.

Bad Religion is a top tier band, and have been brilliant even into recent modern times. I've seen them live at least 40 times over the years.

Having said that, there are big sections of metal I'm not a fan of at all. But a random metal song would likely be more enjoyable to me than a random punk song.

And metal is just maniacs that burn churches and sing about national socialism... and environmentalism. :p I don't believe this. But hyperboles are hyperboles.

I used to be the sort of dude that thought punk wasn't varied... But then I got into it and found it there's a hell of a lot of variety even within the same subgenre. Discharge's Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing, GISM's Detestation, Bad Brain's self-titled, and Negative Approach's Tied Down are all hardcore punk records... But they don't sound the same.
