A lot of them for me are childhood classics and still hold up. Stuff like Nimh, Land Before Time and An American Tail are really well-made movies (especially that Land Before Time). Even his iffy movies like Rock-a-Doodle and a Troll in Central Park are still full of really great animation.

I love the quality of his animation. It's always so fluent and full of life. Even in Titan AE which I found to just be...alright...the animation was great.

His good movies are close to being great but just barely miss the mark. Secret of nimh and American tale are good but lack something found in timeless movies.

Most of his stuff is just meh.

He mustve been talented to be working on animation for Disney at the age of 2.

Bluth was born in 1937, he couldn't have worked on Snow White. In actuality:

Bluth attended Brigham Young University in Utah for one year and after got a job at The Walt Disney Company. He started in 1955 as an assistant to John Lounsbery for Sleeping Beauty.

What do you consider timeless animated movies?

Id say his glory days were the 80s with Nimh, American Tale, Land Before time, All dogs go to heaven, and those laser disc games.

Anyway, The Land Before Time movies and Rock-a-Doodle were my favorite movies as a young kid in the late 80s/early 90s. I still have the Rock-a-Doodle VHS and I used to watch it well into the late 90s. I actually haven't seen Secret of Nimh or An American Tail yet.

What did you guys think of Anastasia? I actually saw that for the first time last year.

I like Anastasia. I liked the music in it and Rasputen was a lot of fun. Didn't much care for Bartok, though.

Land Before Time is my childhood. Secret of Nimh is straight up a good movie and a very cool premise.

Nearly all of the rest of those bluth movies are straight up garbage though, but I don't mind because competition for Disney was sorely needed since Disney was also nearly straight up garbage in the 80s, and that competition from don bluth with stuff like secret of nimh forced Disney to get their act together and give us what would eventually come to be known as The Renaissance era starting with The Little Mermaid, my childhood Disney movie.

And I say this despite actually liking Thumbelina and Anastasia as a kid >__> (I don't mind Anastasia but outright despise Thumbelina now)

Also, I always confuse Balto and Princess and the Swan as being part of Don Bluth movies. They have that same "not quite Disney" quality to them.

I really have no idea what happened. The Secret of NIMH and The Land Before Time are fantastic. All Dogs Go to Heaven was pretty good too from what I remember. Then the 90s hit and I have no idea what happened. Rock-a-Doodle and The Pebble and the Penguin are fairly enjoyable if you're in a forgiving mood, but they're nowhere near as good as his films from the 80s.

Nostalgia isn't really a factor either as The Secret of NIMH is a movie I only saw about four ago.

The animation was superb too. I was looking at a clip of the climax the other day and you can really see how much detail each movement has.

I have yet to see all of his work. But what I've seen, his movies are very bleak. And have this rushed happy ending that I don't really go along with. I remember really liking An American Tale as a kid and I watched it recently and holy fuck. I wanted to lay my head in a mousetrap and end it all. It was so relentlessly cruel. I don't always need to feel good during movies (my favorite animated movie Up famously starts by kicking its audience in the groin) but they're just not fun at all to get through.

The Land Before Time does the whole bleak-to-happy transition very well and I honestly consider it to be Don Bluths best work.
