Do what you want. The game is very forgiving and open world for players. There isn't a lot of stuff that can't be done sooner or later. Personally, I focused on my farm and completing packages for the first year and made friends later, but that's because that was my favorite part. It pretty much up to you.

Take it at your own pace. I only played a bit of it, but like a lot of Harvest Moon games, you can focus on any particular area you want. Farming, fishing, mining, whatever.

There might be an optimal way to do it to get the most money or whatever, but I prefer to just tell people to play these kinds of games their own way. Start with some crops and move up however you decide

the game doesn't end so don't feel the need to min/max or do everything optimally. i tried to and it killed my enjoyment early on. just pretend it's your farm. you make the decisions and watch it grow. it's meant to be a chill experience.

though i will say take note of when seasons change though and make sure you don't have too many seasonal crops up when it happens or they'll die >_>

Completing the packages goes a long way to making everything easier. All of them give some sort of benefit that will pay of majorly in the long run.

I didn't know you can pick what type of farm you want. I'm thinking about going with the water one, just to have more fish.

Seems like a LOT of fun, if I'm being honest. I'm happy I picked it up again. I bought it a long time ago, played it for a bit but the controller didn't work that well back then. Much better now

Anyways, since I went with the Island Farm, I'm going to do a lot of fishing and making food with veggies and fish. How do you increase skills in this game? Am I getting "Fishing EXP" by catching fish or is it that you have to find books or someone has to "teach" you to the next level?

man i don't want to contradict my last post but don't go for the water one lol. you won't have more fish. just waaaay less space to work with. i'll leave it at that.

If you like fishing, by all means. However, the water one is one of the more difficult ones to farm on. The basic one is actually good because it has a little of everything.

This was how I was when I first played this game. But I play with a controller now, and that's made it a bit easier. I also didn't know to turn on the indicator of where you're planting/watering/whatever, and I always misclicked

@Dash_Harber

IIRC, a lure and a lead weight are the same thing. Bait can be used as well, though. Ideally, you want to have a rod, with a lure, and a piece of bait each time you cast. Better rods can use better lures, and they all have different effects that are useful for different things.

Haha, yeah, it has that effect. Also, the wiki is your friend if you are looking to fill out the fishing packages. A lot of the fish are locked to certain times, seasons, and even weather.

I'm role playing as a fishermen, I don't even know what that is.

After I go at least a full year as this, I'm going to switch over to more of a farmer on what little land that I have. I'm just stocking up right now on resources and filling out the fish stuff

I do have some blueberries growing in front of my house and they're making me about 10,000 a harvest, and I've planted the tree that will give out it's product (sorry, can't remember off the top of my head) in Fall, and should be mature at the start of the season

I've on floor 50 in the mines right now. I got a pretty okay Broken Trident from fishing, but I still hate the combat. I need to just harvest a bunch of stone and make staircases to the bottom, but since I'm a fishermen, that idea bothers me. Got to catch them all!

I haven't made a single friend in the game yet. I'm waiting until next year for that as well once I set up a farm and add sprinklers and have more time in the day to do social stuff.

tl;dr

Fishing the entire first year to save up supplies and money to make a better transition into farming and social stuff in year 2

I know this is a stupid question, but how do you cook in this game? I keep getting recipes, but I don't have a clue what I need to make any of them. They're not in the crafting menu

Do I need a campfire or something? Hmm, maybe that's it. I'll look once I'm done with this show, but if anyone can tell me while I wait, that would be great as well

So uh, here's something about Stardew Valley that will throw Harvest Moon players off: You can just plant your crops as a 3x3. As a matter of fact, its more optimal to do 3x3s. And you don't need space in between. You can walk on crops without damaging them. It also consolidates space so you can get more out of your Scarecrows.

And dammit TC you're making me wanna go back and dig into my idea of playing a druggie schoolgirl who only grows stuff for alcohol and coffee.
