We would be better off if some of the money sent to churches was diverted to NASA, say the same amount that would be normally taxed.

They also seem to forget that churches must accept a reduced role in politics in exchange for not having to pay taxes thanks to the Johnson Amendment. Make them pay taxes by dropping them from the 501(c)(3) tax category, and the sky becomes the limit for their involvement in the political sphere (and nothing would make euphoric atheists any angrier than they already are in regards to religion by allowing religion to join politics in full force without any repercussions).

It's not strictly true. There's still sales tax and property taxes, afterall. There's also no traditional income to tax (or at least there shouldn't be; if they serve coffee or distribute music, it should be free) and while their donations are exempt, they're not the only exempt donations (not by a long shot).
