My car is old and it's just starting to have all the things break. Repairs are adding up. Love that lil car but a 16 year old sporty German ride is hard on the perpetually light wallet.

I've been researching affordable small and subcompact cars that do well for short commutes and the occasional longer day trip on highways. Just want a safe and comfortable ride. I do not need a beast of a car, they can be too fun and hard on fuel. So the short list was:

Honda Fit: great car but higher end of price and few incentives
Mitsubishi Mirage: great fuel economy and warranty but weak and doesn't have great reviews anywhere
Nissan Micra: pretty cool but barebones and fuel economy is worse than many
Kia Rio: pretty capable car but they got really pricy damn
Chevy Spark: fancy electronics and safety features but engine is on the weaker side
Toyota Yaris: amazing fuel economy but higher price
Ford Fiesta: seems capable and less fuel efficient with few incentives
Fiat 500: great car a not so great cost
Mazda 2: cute car but Mazda also got way expensive and stopped offering this model

Right now I'm strongly leaning to the Spark or Micra. That's a shocker as I really didn't think a domestic model was going to be worth a look. Chevy seems to be hurting for customers and offering a lot of extras. Nissan still make a very affordable and capable little car.

Going to test drive some cars tomorrow and probably get a new one within the month, if not the week. We'll see how it goes. It's a bit exciting. It would be my first new car.

Anyone that has any of these cars I'd love to hear feedback. Or if I missed a worthwhile model that would be great to know too!

Second one is my actual car

Gets 50mpg hwy max and more around 41 or 42 city and hwy most of the time

Was low 21k after taxes/title in Dec 2015, and was my first new car

Love to drive it, love the mileage, and love having something of my own. My 2 year free checkup type warranty is about to this year, so I'm sure everything will break then... But yeah, I don't regret anything about it

Go with the Fit. Good resale if need-be, and a generally reasonable quality to maintenance cost ratio. I drive a Nissan now, but I've had a couple of Hondas, and my dad's had three since I've been alive (if you count Acura), and they're overall the best value. I'd avoid anything domestic (low value and quality) or Korean (if they have timing belts - I've heard from a couple of mechanics they go quite early sometimes and even under warranty won't necessarily be covered).

Hyundai Elantra. You'll get loads of extras on the cheap, and the extra space helps. Hell I lived in mine for 11 months.

I second the Hyundai. Even the Veloster.

I just bought a brand new Tucson and I couldn't be happier with it.

I want the lower price and the fuel economy. I don't necessarily need a subcompact. It's just that most of the lowest priced cars are the smaller ones or subcompact. I would definitely prefer the car on the smaller side.

Pricing out what's available there is one of the base model Sparks that I could get for 12k out the door (including dealer fees and taxes)

The things Chevy includes are 2 years of free oil changes (4 changes), 5 years of roadside assistance, 5 years of OnStar basic.

When you're in the really low price models going with manual transmission can cut the cost down by a third. And spare you from a really shitty transmission. Currently drive an automatic but if I can shift on a bike I can do the same with a car

I guess Korean cars are going to get a price increase in the near future... Apparently Trump is getting rid of the free trade deal with South Korea. So basically everyone is just going to amp up with partnerships with other countries that they didn't need to before while America goes all iron curtain-lite with trade... Canada has already bolstered its dealings with China, Japan, and Europe, and there's apparently some new Commonwealth stuff going down later because of Brexit. What exactly is Trump's logic here?
