Yeah, this shit opinion is somehow accepted on B8. The character that played a huge role in reviving Disney, but I'm not allowed to loathe a generic/zero flaw action hero.

Instead of Maui singing "You're welcome" it should be Ariel.

See, this. This right here. You're saying Ariel should be beloved not because of what she is as a character, but because of the role she played in Disney's revival as a company. I could easily say that it was a dramatic shift in Disney's art style, plus a real focus on making musicals, that made TLM successful. Ariel just happened to be the lead character of that movie.

And no, you're not allowed to handwave a bizarre hatred of Mulan when literally the only word that doesn't describe BELLE in that last description is "action".

Because her looks and voice are all she has and she throws away the latter for a chunk of the movie???

My post wasn't meant to be taken so seriously, lol. I didn't fall in love with Ariel because of the impact her film had on the Disney renaissance, because I didn't know what that meant at the time. But hating on Ariel is basically like victim-blaming. A young naive girl with a bunch of emotions is drawn in by a predator (Ursula). I guess the concept of dramatic irony is lost on simpletons, because of course Ursula is obviously evil to the AUDIENCE.

And Belle is actually flawed as I've countlessly explained numerous times. Mulan goes through the laziest trope in history i.e a montage and becomes super warrior and has no faults. "Oh, she's an awkward doofus in the beginning, how endearing!" Please..

I hold main characters to a much higher standard than tertiary characters. And it's not whether they are well-written or not when it comes to how much I like them; it's how competent they are. That's why I'll take Professor Harold Hill or Beowulf Schaeffer or Henry Higgins or Indiana Jones over Belle, Elsa and Ariel every time. That's why I take Quinn King over Quasimodo any day of the week.

Because, most of the time, a competent character has more depth to them. You have to create nuanced flaws to overcome the lack of obvious elementary flaws designed for lesser minds to understand. That's why Superman, well-written, is amazing. His struggles are cerebral and philosophical. Disney struggles are sexual every time.

I am cool with victim-blaming if the victim is as dumb as Ariel

also I feel that characters being flawed/realistic is generally overrated. like, if a character has annoying glaring flaws, then they are an annoying character, and not likable. "flawed but likable" is a tightrope that's hard to walk successfully.

what I'm saying is, I'd rather have "super warrior with no faults" than "super imbecile who I want to throttle." this is not even a sendup of mulan/ariel specifically -- just a general character preference thing. it might be better if the super warrior had some flaws, but better to err on the side of too little than too much.

The flaws you're talking about are not realistic flaws. Ariel is also a completely flawed character, but it's not realistic. No one in the history of the ever has trusted women with octopus tentacles and evil achromatically-eyed eels. If they do, they are lambasted and roasted for it.

On the flip side, Mulan is a super warrior with no faults. It's infuriating. Bitch, who gives a fuck about your father. He's silent while you've been foisted into a culture of female denigration. Sure, stop the huns. At least the huns have women in their army. They're the enlightened ones.

This is why a competent character has the most potential for development. They aren't perfect, but they aren't useless. They are good at something, but not everything. They have value but they aren't overvalued.

eh, it's somewhat of a caricature, but it's a caricature with a core of truth at its heart -- teenage girls can be morons about their crushes, and, specifically, might do incredibly moronic things if offered an exclusive opportunity to get with their crushes

I just don't like it

re: competence: I don't actually distinguish between main/side characters. for me, it's heroes/villains. if you're going to plot evil, then be competent about it. I like mastermind types and can't stand the "bumbling villain" trope. but if you're a good guy, I'm more likely to cut you slack for being a derp, as long as you're otherwise likable.

See, for me, a side character is a flavor. If they are memorable, if they add something unique, if they are an utter burst of whatever their personality is, that's good enough in a movie. I expect more from TV because TV can actually tell a real story.

There is nothing wrong with flawed characters, so long as they are well written or their flaws don't become a completely overwhelming part of their character

Unfortunately, most Disney princesses are neither, mainly because they don't present much outside of their flaws. But at least they look cute!

Ursula was obviously evil to everybody in The Little Mermaid aside from Ariel wasn't she? Maybe if she ever paid any sort of attention to anything underwater instead of being obsessed with human objects she would know such things. I mean her dad literally banished her for being evil didn't he?
