Some other factors:

1. Cell phones, internet, new entertainment options (video games etc...), student loan debt all are big factors in the budget which really weren't prevalent back then.

2. Half that stuff was useless and just a result of marketing, which the internet has debunked.

3. Younger people have listened and learned that experiences trump material possessions and live accordingly. People would rather invest in experiences than shallow materialism to show off to others (don't get me wrong, half the reason young people are doing that stuff is to show off on social media, just a different form of consumerism). Showing pure wealth via things like a Rolex watch just has less social currency than in the past.

Dirty Millennials

I always found bars of soap nasty. I prefer foam.

This. No matter how much I rinse bar soap always leaves that filmy residue on my skin.

So basically, a large % of young people are finding ways to spend less money and be content + live easier, and it's taking money from rich people.

How terrible.

- Casual dining chains like Applebees (that's unfortunate. I like these. I pretty much never go to any though. None in locations that are convenient for me)
- Beer (the beer industry will literally never die. Doesn't belong on the list regardless of it suffering a little bit)
- Napkins (what?)
- Breastaurant chains like Hooters (Never been to one)
- Cereal (meh)
- Golf (0 fucks given)
- Motorcycles (I want them to stop making the loud fucking pointless 900 decibel c***y ones. Then they'd get my sympathy if their industry was fucked)
- Homeownership (this is not an industry)
- Yogurt (don't care)
- Bars of soap (? Really? I don't understand this one)
- Diamonds (overrated garbage)
- Fabric softener (never used it)
- Banks (they'll be fine)
- Department stores (meh)
- Designer handbags (utter garbage)
- Gyms (I don't actually even believe this)
- Home-improvement stores (I only care if Tim Allen cares)
- Football (not going anywhere)
- Oil (meh)

Cereal is basically just candy/desert you drown in milk. Rise of low carb, paleo (aka eggs, bacon, protein shakes are good), skipping breakfast has lowered demand.

Gyms surprise me too, maybe its the rise of Crossfit, hiking, biking etc... taking away from big box gyms (kinda like microbrew vs. big beer).

-Dining out is bad for you for the most part. Besides I can get high quality ingredients cheaper online and cook from home.

-Wine>Beer also try some absinthe if it's legal in your area.

-Nothing of value was lost

-2D>3D besides porn is easily accessible online outside of the Middle East, UK, and SK.

-Breakfast makes me gain weight rapidly, so I don't eat breakfast anymore.

-I have a solution to this issue, take a page from South Korea and have more promotion of screen golf. Golf courses are too expensive for millennials.

-Motorcycles aren't going anywhere, they'll adapt eventually to alternative energy.

-Nobody can afford a home these days save for the very rich.

-I don't eat yogurt.

-No big loss as liquid soap is better.

-Blame third wave feminism for the decline in diamond sales, also some wise folk are sticking to 2D and saving the money.

-That's sad, however nowadays I add vinegar alongside detergent to my load as a fabric softener.

-Banks are here to stay even with cryptocurrency, not everyone lives in a crypto friendly area.

-Yeah, department stores are going to be extinct in the next 5 years, online commerce killed them more brutally than Genghis Khan did to entire cities.

-Few can afford designer handbags.

-Gyms are here to stay.

-Obviously, they will die since not many people can afford a home.

-Football is here to stay. The ratings are declining due to anti-Americanism, there's a way to fight Nazis and kneeling down and disrespecting highly sacred American traditions is not it.

-We are entering an alternative energy future, so oil won't be used much in the future. We do need a widespread push for hydrogen as an alternative fuel though for places such as the Midwest that electric won't do any good.

Gyms? That's bs. My small ass town of 26K has a ton of them sprouting up -- and all of them are packed at all times. When I visit other states... the same thing there, too. I don't know where or how they came up with that one.

And the housing one: Many of us would like to own a house, but they're just too damn expensive. I'm lucky I live in Texas where 200K can actually get you something fairly decent, but that's still a lot of money for the average 24 - 30 year old.

I don't know what they thought was going to happen with housing, when many millennials are swamped with debt and houses are only getting more expensive.

Also, fuck diamonds. I'm perfectly happy to see them fall.

I'm Gen X, here's my take on this list:

- Casual dining chains like Applebees - Not worth the cost, make better food or lower your prices.
- Beer - Vodka exists, so...
- Napkins - This makes no sense.
- Breastaurant chains like Hooters -
Garbage food, fake sex appeal, not worth my time or money.
- Cereal - Midnight snack
- Golf - Boring.
- Motorcycles - Over-revving jackasses and weekend bikers cutting me off and then giving me the bird. Baby boomers on Harleys are the biggest douchebags on the road. Your brand new Harley gear doesn't make you cool, scary, or a rebel, it tells me that you are insecure.
- Homeownership - Wages are low, home prices are skyrocketing, what do you expext?
- Yogurt - Never liked it, but there are 500 flavors for each brand, so this probably is nonsense.
- Bars of soap - Liquid body wash rinses off better, bar soap for hands.
- Diamonds - Ripoff.
- Fabric softener - Ripoff.
- Banks - Charge me to use my own money? I'm supposed to be happy about that?
- Department stores - High prices, mediocre products.
- Designer handbags - Ripoff
- Gyms - Work out at home for free.
- Home-improvement stores - I actually like these.
- Football - Killing itself, with concussion denial, too many commercials, a thousand dollars to take family to one game.
- Oil - Most cars still run on gas, but dirty, expensive, wasteful, needs to go.

This didn't start with millennials, most of these things are overpriced, unnecessary ripoffs. We are just getting wise to the scam.

I'd argue it was worth the cost at one point. You could get a mediocre full meal with sides for less than what a burger (just the burger) at 5 guys costs. However as attendance dropped, they struggled to keep up the profits, and did so by making crappier food. The last time I went was when they served me a chicken breast that was still frozen on the inside.

Football is doing just fine. The MAGA crowd is just using the outrage of the day to put two and two together. NFL still got record ratings on premier matchups. The only thing that changes is that the NFL was the last ratings domino to fall to the abundance of choice. This country still adores football. It just has better options that watching a Jags/Browns game on Thursday night and wont watch literally anything NFL at all times anymore.
