What causes us to have a deep seated almost natural hated of spoilers for works of fiction? Was it once useful in some way?

Spoilers are kinda like doing something really annoying. If you're doing it yourself or seeking it out yourself that's one thing, but if you weren't wanting spoilers for something it sucks.

you can only experience the unknown one time

although research on the subject suggests we enjoy knowing what happens next, so spoilers aren't really a big deal
