That's usually my Battlefield experience. The last few have just been pure action movie cliche filtered through Hu-Rah bravado. I did actually play through the Battlefield 1 story line and it was really fun. To be fair, though, all FPS story modes are pretty much tutorials for the online nowadays.

When I was a "kid" we didn't have any games that really functioned like that.

no. back when I did play them I barely touched multi player. fighting games would make more sense on that but even then i'm a odd ball who plays them by myself against the AI opponents.

Yeah I can understand Pokemon has a really deep and interesting story mode, oh and also collecting Pokemon and building a bond with them is the lore of the Pokemon series!

Anyone who plays Pokemon for the story also plays Mario for the story.

back in the day I was a child and easily entertained. I also played to "catch em all" that was my goal. its also why I quit the series became too much of a hassle to catch em all

That's why I said the multiplayer is the only relevant mode; at least for grown-ups. Back when I used to play RBY/GSC it was all about beating the E4.

Ever since 4th gen, competitive multiplayer is what the game's all about. The story mode/gotta catch 'em all/beat the E4-trials is for kids.

its literally a child games though. if I did get back into it would be just for the gameplay. I legit enjoy JRPG gameplay. its an acquired taste though as I used to detest turn based combat mechanics

a better argument would be a game series that is built 100% around multiplayer, like league of legends I suppose. I don't play the game but it seems like it would lose a lot of appeal if just fighting AI bots

Even from that JRPG aspect the single-player is quite mediocre, anyone who plays those traditional JRPs would be underwhelmed by Pokemon.

The competitive battling aspect can actually be surprising complex, if someone thinks Pokemon is an easy game they should play against actual people - 6v6 singles or Doubles. If the multiplayer is removed from Pokemon, a lot of appeal would be lost in the "grown-ups" section of the fan base. Of course, kids would still buy it, to catch em all or become the Pokemon master.

well good thing I got out of the series. I just don't do competitive gaming. I can't bring myself to dedicate myself to one game or genre for that matter long enough to get on a high skill level.

but to add i've noticed compared to quite a lot of people i'm apparently a very easy to please guy. but i've played some truly horrible games while people hate and bash games relentlessly that aren't horrible just mediocre. and list games like FF 13 is the worst game they've ever played. when their is far crappier games out there even from that era.

Well I must be a living anomaly to you then. I can count on one hand the number of times I've ever battled another person.
