100 years from the human perspective is already a long time, imagine 1,000,000 years and even much longer than that. its not even counting possible parallel universes, other planets and dimensions, and possible afterlife.

its absolutely terrifying.

I love these kinds of thoughts. The best is when nobody understands why they're mindblowing.

I don't see how it's mindblowing or terrifying. I can leave a rock in the fridge for a year, it'll still just be a rock in the fridge

That's true enough; but the thought if our male ancestors all managed to father children at the age of 60, then we'd only need to go back 16 generations to have an ancestor who lived a thousand years ago -- now that blows my mind. Well, a bit.

100 years is a long time for humans because humans do things. They have a story to tell. The Earth has a story, but geologic time doesn't tell it quickly.

and if its true that what we see is a virtual reality, what is it for? theres a belief that we are all beings of energy with countless lives and memories that we cant remember or just barely remember once we are in these bodies. so we are born over and over again to learn from our mistakes and discover. so this thing we see is just a reality that our souls go into for new experiences. but what area are our souls relaxing in before we choose or get sent into this known reality?

If we have an infinite succession of lives but have consciousness and memories of only the one we're currently experiencing, then I feel short-changed -- because to me, that seems pretty much like having only one life.

Surely the biggest logical argument against human-to-human reincarnation is that unless the rates of births and deaths are equal, there are either too few or too many bodies to go around to be occupied by transmigrating souls?

Nah there are lots of logical resolutions to this. Maybe old souls are reincarnated but new ones are still constantly born, or maybe they split at each reincarnation, or maybe they're actually shared between multiple bodies.
