My boss told me this morning that his father hit his head a few days ago and had a scan showing be had bleeding in his brain, and then another scan last night revealed it was getting worse and that they need to do emergency surgery today. The guy has had a lot of health issues lately so brain surgery is the last thing he needs :/ But when my boss told me all that I responded saying "Oh I'm really sorry to hear that... Hopefully he pulls through!" and then he broke down crying :(

I feel really bad. Was there something better I could've said to help ease his mind a little?

I'd say hes crying at the thought of losing his father and not at your response.

I know :( I just felt awkward because he completely had it together until I responded.

i'd say, "that's awful. hope the surgery works."

but as someone who's mom died at 59, I'm insanely jealous that this guys dad is 92.

"Damn I'm really sorry to here that, that must be really tough for you and your family." then if I can abort that conversation I will, if it really lingers, then just keep with the supportive talk and maybe at the end you can go, I hope everything turns out okay.

But yea brain bleed needing surgery in a 92 year old with other medical problems is pretty devestating. I just saw a guy who had a hemorrhagic stroke while in the hospital, and he ended up dying within about 3 days.

You didn't do anything wrong and the best you can do is offer assistance in any way you can and then give him space. He probably shouldn't even be at work when dealing with something this stressful. Losing a parent is painful.

If it was anyone other than your boss I would tell him that he's lived a full life.
