http://www.npr.org/2017/08/24/545812242/1-in-10-sanders-primary-voters-ended-up-supporting-trump-survey-finds

Fully 12 percent of people who voted for Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., in the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries voted for President Trump in the general election. That is according to the data from the Cooperative Congressional Election Study — a massive election survey of around 50,000 people. (For perspective, a run-of-the-mill survey measuring Trump's job approval right now has a sample of 800 to 1,500.)

Political science professor Brian Schaffner of University of Massachusetts, Amherst tweeted the data on Wednesday.

Schaffner's numbers show that after a bitter Democratic primary, more than 1 in 10 of those who voted in the primaries for the very progressive Sanders ended up voting for the Republican in the general election, rather than for the Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton.

What drove those voters to Trump? Schaffner dug into that, as well. What it wasn't was trade, an issue where Sanders was closer to Trump's philosophy than Clinton's. At least, the issue of trade didn't seem to have that much of an impact.

In case there was any doubt

To answer the question that many Clinton supporters may be asking: By this data, yes — there are enough of those Sanders-Trump voters who could have potentially swung the election toward Clinton and away from Trump.

Specifically, if the Sanders-Trump voters in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania had voted for Clinton, or even stayed home on Election Day, those states would have swung to Clinton, and she would have won 46 more electoral votes, putting her at 278 — enough to win, in other words.

This is despicable for two reasons

1. The Democratic party's clear favoritism towards Clinton and complete unwillingness to support the growing Sanders faction in their party

2. That some supporters are so idiotic and bitter that they willingly voted against everything Sanders stands for just to "make a point" or something

Party seems to have had something to do with it — Sanders-Trump voters were much less likely than Sanders-Clinton or Sanders-third party voters to have been Democrats. Likewise, approval of President Barack Obama appears to be related — Sanders-Trump voters approved of Obama much less than other Sanders primary voters.

In fairness, the "but muh platform" argument hinged on people believing Hillary Clinton was honest. Which she was and is not.

The real stupidity comes from trusting Trump in this scenario since he's clearly as big a liar/flip flopper as Clinton was. The optimal thing to do was to vote third party or not vote all since America is bound for some economic disaster soon regardless of who we elect.

The only solid reason to vote Clinton would probably have been climate policy or Supreme Court justices.

one has to wonder if to some degree sanders-trump voters would have voted sanders in the general had he won

there are always people voting in primaries who have no actual loyalty to the party they're voting in the primary of--this is basically why closed primaries are a thing.

trying to make this about 'salty berniebros' is pretty much the least useful approach. two ways to look at it:

1) DNC alienated independents by mass-endorsing clinton before the public ever voted, and having internal discussions that showed obvious favoritism, which were then released, showcasing their dirty laundry

2) many sanders supporters were being disingenuous

neither would suggest that strongly left-leaning men abandoned the democrats to vote for trump because their fee-fees were hurt. but by all means play into the dialogue that those who'd love for the left to eat its own want, OP.

of these two, the former seems much more likely

if anything this data suggests to me that Sanders would have been a better candidate for the general -- not saying that he definitely would have been, but these defections from non-partisans are meaningful and not a strike against Bernie

i'm not really calling it a strike against bernie here

i'm just noting that the possibility that 10% his base was backing him as 'lesser of two evils' is much more likely than that 10% of his base got bitter and butthurt and voted against their party.
