It gives you more of an interest and makes it more exciting. People go too far, definitely, but it's not any more meaningless than a lot of things.

I mean I guess I can understand it from an evolutionary/tribal perspective. Still makes it all seem pretty barbaric, and you could argue that those who dislike sports are more highly evolved and have shed those primitive attributes.

I do think liking a random team is dumb.

I live in one of the top 10 US cities, with a very strong football culture, and yet you will find many native born people rooting for other teams. It just makes no sense. When you're rooting for your own team, there's an aspect of hometown pride, which can go too far, but is all in good fun in the right proportions.

I can't speak to people who arbitrarily choose random teams, but I imagine most people pledge their loyalties based on hometown affiliation, myself included.

I, being from Kansas City and having lived there for the first 22 years of my life, am forever devoted to the Chiefs and Royals. Even though I moved to Minnesota two years ago, I still care about the KC teams.

I don't understand people who just wake up one day and decide to be fans of a particular team. The ONLY people I can give a break to are those who live in places like Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, etc. - They really are kinda hosed when it comes to pro sports.

Its not anymore meaningless than anything else in life. At the end of the day were all gonna be dead in 100 years. Is anything we entertain ourselves with in this life truly meaningful?

Because it's fun to some people? Oh no, I love the Blackhawks, Cubs, Bears, and Illini and root for them heavily. Damn neanderthal brain.

Yeah that's probably true in some cases, but very few. There are actually a lot of fans of one of our rival teams for no reason whatsoever. Some people are just contrarian.

Cuz I been cheering for this team since I was 5 years old. My parents were fans. Uncles, Aunts, Grandparents were all fans. And now my wife and 3 kids are fans.
It's all I know lol

TC if you want to think about it from a more logical perspective, the point of sports and games is to win. And if you watch a team regularly, you want the games to be the most entertaining--you want it to be worth your time and money. Therefore you want your team to win, because if they lose or if they're terrible then you may feel it wasn't worth the time you spent on it.

And yeah, as a result most people get involved in college sports instead. You do meet a decent number of Braves fans though.

What I don't quite understand is the loyalty to a team whose players keep changing -- it's like replacing the handle and the head on a broom over and over, and yet treating it as the same broom. Ultimately, the only thing permanent about a team is its name and, I guess, maybe its location; so is it a territorial thing (even if the players aren't from the team's home town)?

Mostly, yes. You want the team and the stadium closest to you (or the one you grew up around) to have the most fun experience while you're viewing or attending the games.

I mean if you replaced all the players and coaches at once, you'd have a point, but when one guy leave and another joins, they all now become the team. Eventually you swap out all the players, but it happens gradually enough that nothing major changes with the last guy, or any one player.
