First lady Melania Trump thanked former first daughter Chelsea Clinton in a late-night tweet on Tuesday for defending her and President Donald Trump’s son, Barron, from online bullying, the chief issue the first lady said she would address during her husband’s presidency.

“Thank you @ChelseaClinton – so important to support all of our children in being themselves!” Melania wrote on Twitter.

The 11-year-old Barron had been criticized by The Daily Caller, a conservative website, for “not dressing the part” due to a T-shirt he was seen wearing in news photos of the first family returning from vacation. The article drew widespread condemnation, and Clinton, who knows a thing or two about the glare from the spotlight first children are invariably raised in, chastised the site.

In a pair of posts on Twitter, she wrote, “It’s high time the media & everyone leave Barron Trump alone & let him have the private childhood he deserves,” and, “No child should be talked about in the below manner-in real life or online. And for an adult to do so? For shame.” Clinton has often been critical of Trump in tweets since his presidency began.

I think this is part of why some people think that he's fair game. He looks a lot older than he actually is.

Anyway, Chelsea got a lot of flak at the same age because she went through a very awkward phase while in the public eye. She may be the only one alive to really understand what Baron is going through. Honestly, she probably had it worse.

I know I'm in the minority but I think the parents knowingly forfeit that when they run for presidency. It's not right for people to target the first family but that will nevertheless happen without fail. It's something the candidates consider long before they ever get into office and have decided it is an acceptable risk in getting what they want.

I respect Clinton's plea to leave him alone and find the actions of the people who can't do that to generally be repugnant but as far has him "deserving" a private childhood, I disagree with that. I especially disagree with it considering that it is his father, an aggressively vile human being who crosses even more important boundaries on a whim without a second thought, that put him in this position. I pity him and would like him to be left alone, not because he's the president's son or a kid, but because in this regard, he's just another victim of the hubris of Donald Trump.
