While it is a good time to teach the issue, the method used seems confusing and er, sort of making use of the transgender girl in a manner that seems wrong. Maybe the young girl liked it, but it just seems kind of mean to put a five-year-old under the spotlight like that.

Maybe an introduction and a quick basis explanation would have caused less of an issue. I don't know what is in the books, but I would guess a transgender character. Comparing the student to a character might make more sense.
