What. In a lot of ways she's worse than even the early princesses. There isn't really much that's even likable about her other than her design. She was selfish, incredibly dumb, didn't give a single shit about her dad's celebration or whatever and damn near doomed everybody all because she somehow couldn't recognize the most obviously evil person who lives underwater and wanted to hook up with a human guy she knew literally nothing about because he was hot. It's like the perfect formula for awful teen romance role models

I think he means that princesses pre-Ariel were generic and existed solely to look pretty and have a man rescue them.

Ariel still sucks, but I will admit that she's the first DYNAMIC princess in the Disney canon.

debatable whether or not that's better than being just a decoration/prize (though I would say it's worse)

Yeah...but she actively gets herself into that stupid scenario. That's better than the whole "I'm not going to do ANYTHING but I STILL need to be rescued." in terms of agency. It's worse in terms of being an obnoxious character, but better in terms of agency.

Nick Wilde (recency bias, maybe. But for now really high up there)
Belle (Easily best Disney Princess, Leia is second best, ahaha~)
Judge Claude Frollo (After watching Hunchback with VI like... a few months ago now... he became a top 5 villain)
