Well that's what the discussion is about. Most social progressives in America don't care what's going on in Saudi Arabia. They're more concerned about how employees in female dominated fields don't make as much money as those in male dominated fields.

What makes you say that with such certainty?

People invest more effort into causes they might be better able to affect, sure, but that doesn't mean they "don't care" about other ones.

Progressives speak out against the Saudi bullshit all the time, but there's nothing we can do because every candidate of every mainstream party supports continuing our crappy relationship with them.

Not really, if you support affirmative action at all or woman-only or minority-only scholarships you're interested in discriminating against men and white people. Also that stuff isn't not-feminism. You don't get called not-a-feminist for discriminating on the basis of race or gender as long as it's the right races and genders.

It's not like there's a pool of money that could've gone to anyone, and the scholarship people discriminated against white males to limit who could get the money.

If the women/minorities weren't getting the money, no one would've, because the entire point of the money is to help women/minorities. That's doesn't even a tiny bit count as discrimination.

AA is far more discriminatory because it is forced onto employers, for example.

Ah see but if no whites applied to that programming job, they still need a programmer. That business requirement doesn't magically go away. The business would be forced to fill the requirement somehow. Minorities are inherently in the race in that sense (i.e. at the bottom of the list, but still on the list).

Not so with a scholarship. It exists ONLY to help whatever specific group it is trying to target (whether it be race, gender, country, research topic, test scores, artists, athletes - all of which are very common scholarship targets). If no one from their target group wants the scholarship then... there's no need for the scholarship. It totally vanishes.

Ultimately getting rid of all race/gender based scholarships is the goal in that sense.

Maybe the company doesn't really need a programmer and it's just a community outreach thing to help white people.

Would you object to white-only or male-only scholarships? I've been working under the assumption that you're unequally okay with race- and gender-specific scholarships, which is discriminatory. I still think it's discriminatory if you're okay with all race- and gender-based scholarships but at least it's consistent.

If it's their money I personally don't really care what they do with it.

But in terms of social value, if whites and males are the majorly privileged classes like they are in our society, then it's a moot point, doesn't really change anything (which is the purpose of a scholarship). It would just be if you want to make a point about white/male supremacy or something, which I obviously think is dumb as hell. This might apply to the whites-only programmer scholarship too.

The "system" is race- and gender-agnostic. There's no way to actually "fix" it without just discriminating in favor of women and minorities, which is not fair and harms white men.

Handicapped people are actually incapable of doing certain things, while people of certain races and (usually) genders are not. A person in a wheelchair can't walk up the stairs because they actually can't walk. There's nothing inherent in being a woman or a minority that makes you less capable, unless it's for something like modeling or acting or whatever.

There are plenty of disadvantaged white people and plenty of rich black people. The poor white person is in more need of a leg up than the rich black person. And giving either one of them a leg up on the basis of their race is wrong because there's nothing they can do to earn that.

(also Asians have more privilege than white people on average, if you look at income, 2-parent households, crime victimization, lifespan, education....)
(it's still wrong to "fix" that "problem" with race-based discrimination)
