I got sent to the city spelling bee in 6th grade. I didn't do well enough on the written test to go to the oral competition though. But I was the one of the reps from my elementary school. So that was kinda cool.

I won the spelling bee in 4th and 5th grade. In 5th, the final word was "perish" and I went to a private school...our teacher told us every day for weeks that she meant "perish" as in expire, not "parish" as in church. But then the word comes up and the girl before me is like "P---A---" and I'm like "YOU FOOL!"

Spelled samaritan as semariten or something, at some state spelling bee, got like 17th or whatever. Previously I'd always choked the school spelling bee through something dumb, even though I was in general the best speller. This was elementary.

Back in the fifth grade here, our school system had a spelling contest where they had the four best students from each school play against each other. My team lost in the first round because my teammates were screwing up the simplest words, such as spelling 'angel' as 'angle'. I kind of wish I could watch the recording of the match today, because I remember shaking my head and giving "What the hell?" gestures every time they did it. I felt like such a jerk at the time, but I bet it'd be hilarious to watch from an adult's perspective.
