I think I made it through 1.4 episodes. I get the gist; Danny is a moron, completely unlikeable, unrelatable, impossible to sympathise with or look up to in any way. Anything else I need to know other than that and that he can do some weird alternate universe monk shit with his hand?

Yeah, it's actually pretty important. The plot is pretty much directly tied to the plot of Iron Fist. I'd say it's even more important to see than S2 of Daredevil (though that's important too). You'll be better off if you suffer through it like I did.

Maybe you can find a plot summary on youtube, there are quite a few people with your mindset that want to want Defenders but don't want to watch that awful show first.

Imo I personally think that it's the kinda bad that makes you keep watching, because I liked the show despite saying "what the hell is he/she even doing" nearly every episode shrugs.

Iron fist was kind of an interesting show because everyone's motivation and allegiances flip flopped a million times. It's a little bit of a clusterfuck, but that's what makes you keep watching. Characters that you liked in the beginning get worse as the show goes on and characters that you didn't like become more interesting. You should give it another chance. The Defenders is basically a season of daredevil fused with a season of iron fist.

Watching Defenders without watching Iron Fist is like watching Avengers after only seeing Iron Man 2 and Hulk

I just started watching Defenders, so I don't know how important Iron Fist will end up being in the long run. But the villain organization in Defenders is the same one from Iron Fist (and part of Daredevil), so it'll probably be necessary to at least read up on the plot.

Not really, it'd help a bit to understand the enemy motivation, and who a couple of characters are, but the plot is pretty self explanatory.

Read a plot summary. I watched Iron Fist in 2 days and it was a slog all the way through. It's predictable as fuck, basically season 1 of Arrow done bad.

he is pretty important but its not exactly hard to figure out the basic plot of iron fist

i was able to put together the important points after watching the first couple episodes of defenders

Iron Fist probably has the most plot significance of any other Defenders series tbh.

Honestly though, I didn't mind Iron Fist. It started off very, very slow and you really couldn't tell who the main antagonist was even supposed to be but it picked up during later episodes IMO.

Iron Fist is absolutely not necessary to watch Defenders. There is more than enough back and forth between all the heroes that involves catching everyone up to speed on the important plot bits, including the viewer.

And unlike the other characters, Danny Rand is not nuanced. Matt, Jessica, and Luke all have moments where you can see where they're coming from because you know what they've been through personally, but Danny has nothing like that. He wants to kill all the ninjas, and that never changes.

Exactly, his entire role in the plot is as the Iron Fist, and solely based on the fact that an Iron Fist exists in New York. It's not complicated.

And how the Hand is structured, more depth about Gao, and how the resurrection actually works, and that you need to specifically behead them for death to be permanent, and the significance of Danny's post, the significance of him abandoning it, and how heavily involved Claire was with the fight against the Hand.

None of which actually matters in the Defenders, though.
Maybe the beheading thing would... if this show didn't specifically outright elimate their immortality anyway.

Well yeah. You don't have to watch any of the shows to understand The Defenders, the show does a pretty good job of that.

But if you wanna know why things are the way they are, Daredevil S2 and Iron Fist are the most relevant to the plot.
