Isekai isn't reeally a genre. It's more like a setting. You can have isekai comedy (konosuba) or fantasy/adventure (no game no life) or mystery (I know I've heard of one before but it's not coming to mind) or etc



admittedly most of them are sword and sorcery style fantasy adventures

Nah, it is a genre, just one that needs to be attached to another one. When done right, it is different than a regular show of the base genre.

like there's the Showa Godzilla, Heisei Godzilla, and Millenium/Shinsei Godzilla

It's supposed to refer to the Emperor reigning at the time of a series/movie's production. Until the Emperor abdicates the throne sometime this year or the next, everything should technically be called Heisei. But even Toei doesn't even take it that seriously so idk why some fans bother trying to draw lines in the sand.
