I hated Ned Stark. He's the most depressing character in the series and also one of the dumbest.

Tyrion, Arya and Jamie are the most likable characters and it's not even close.

in the books? no way, dude. book 1 she's a moron, book 2 she's a crying victim, book 3 she's a pawn (and also gets creeped on by littlefinger quite a lot). book 5 she's "learning" but basically just watching littlefinger be awesome and has 1-2 moments in which she does something half-worth a damn.

Qyburn? He just got lucky.

And Melisandre doesn't play the game, she's a religious fanatic. She backs Stannis because she think's he's Jesus, not because she thinks he's the rightful heir or anything.

means for his research.

if you look at the divide within the citadel over the dragons and magic in general you can see that there is a faction of maesters that, while not directly aligned with the white walkers, is clearly aligned against the dragons and magic in general.

qyburn has learned to use science to replicate the magic of resurrection, a power otherwise reserved to the white walkers and 'lord of light'. i expect he is working toward destroying magic in the world.

seeing him as a player is also consistent with the observation that each of the major "players" on the surface has at least one manipulator/adviser behind them who sees the game as it really is and guides them.

And I think that a great deal of his advance was a result of his own manipulation. Fat Zollo cut off Jaime's hand; Qyburn treated it. How could the brave companions have possibly been so stupid as to severely harm such a valuable captive without someone smarter than they pushing them to do so? Who served as Maester to Lord Roose Bolton when the letter came from King's Landing suggesting he betray Robb? Who delivered the letter? Who advised Roose to betray Robb, and hand Jaime back to his father?

All Qyburn.

It was this that brought him into Cersei's service, on Jaime's return. He was manipulating his way to King's Landing, and we never saw it.

It's kind of unclear exactly why he was banned, aside from that he was raising the dead. The introduction of a 'school of magic' does imply that maesters use magic. But that means either:

1) He's using white walker magic to raise the dead, or
2) He's using science to raise the dead in a clear effort to replace magic

Either way, he (and Cersei as a whole) are clear tools of the white walkers (though probably unintentionally). I think he is an agent of his 'faction' of the Citadel, and his 'expulsion' may well be a ruse.

I think his goals are much broader than his experiments. His experiments are in service of a broader goal that has been hinted at during Sam's chapter at the end of Book 4.

I think you're reading too much into it. The Brave Companions are genuinely just that stupid and bloodthirsty. He served as maester because Roose killed the one that was there. And I'm pretty sure the rest of what you said is just speculation. For one thing, I don't see Roose Bolton taking advice from a sellsword maester.

I don't think it was even mentioned that he'd been raising the dead at the Citadel, just that he was murdering people and studying black magic. It's also not a choice between "he's a white walker mage" or "he's Frankenstein." Mirri Maz Dur, the red priest, and hell, even Dany were able to raise the dead without using White Walker magic or science.

You think Roose was running the show without any advice from any Maester?

You think he decided to betray Robb entirely on his own?

On its own, I thought that too, but as I learned more and more about Qyburn I became more and more convinced that he had orchestrated a great many events to unfold to his benefit, allowing him to rise to a very high position in the kingdom. Much as was the case for littlefinger. Chaos is a ladder.

The issue is the kind of ressurection he accomplishes. Zombie-mountain is portrayed as being much more like a wight and much less like the other ressurections we've seen.

Also, there's literally nothing suggesting he was murdering anybody that I know of.

I didn't reach this conclusion until the close of book 5, when all the evidence had piled up to suggest that he was more than "Cersei's one and only loyal supporter"

Zombie-like resurrection would also be indicative of someone who's not very good at resurrecting people.

And he mentioned that he cut open the living to perform experiments, I just kind of figured those people were dead.

Its an interesting theory, but is Qyburn is a sadist with designs on the throne or just a brutally pragmatic scientist?

I wouldn't expect Qyburn to have manipulated Bolton, mostly because I think too highly of Roose for that to have been possible. I certainly do believe that Qyburn is a clever, manipulative opportunist, but I'm not sure he has a large-scale political motive. I mean, of course he does, otherwise he wouldn't be where he is, but I'm not sure exactly what it would be.
