Me: I can't get this display to work on my new PC
Nerd: Give me your whole entire computer specs, the ram, the os and service pack version, what type of ram, mother board and pins on it, what cable you're using, what kind of ram, PSU, GPU, does your mobo have a PCI-E slot, also ram, monitor you're using, bias settings, please neatly organize it on an spreadsheet so I can better assist you. ALSO RAM

Me: Bro I don't think you need all that.
Nerd: Yes I do. I can't help you if I don't know those info.

So it's either ask really dumb obvious questions to make the user feel stupid or ask extremely needless nerd questions the user don't understand to make him feel stupid. Gotcha.

They need as much information as they can get so that they can narrow down the problem. Saying your display isn't working, doesn't really help and without all this other information, it would take them longer to help fix your problem as they would have to troubleshoot a ton of shit.

You're the one making false equivalencies here, not me

As I understand RAM can have adverse effects on your comp performance and in my experience helping people and listening to people with computer things often RAM is the problem that clashes with the other parts of the build or was installed incorrectly or is faulty

If I needed help and was asking someone for it, I don't think I would consider a far reach that RAM might be the issue (but I'm smart and I know he's probably just trying to get a see for my build even if, as Vermander said, the OP's requested information was probably excessive)

Let me explain:

The point of the topic isn't literally or even technically about the products I'm talking. Those are just examples of something small, basic and minor that needs a little support. Enter the nerd; who replies with the guise of "I'm trying to help" but the truth is, much like every nerd tries to do with no self awareness, he's just trying to find a way to look superior asking for needless and extreme information to sound smart when in fact the nerd himself don't really care.

While I kind of almost sort of maybe understand the point you're getting at TC, the truth is the best way to assess most PC issues is to get as much base amount of information as possible to whittle down the potential scenarios that could be causing the issue, as computers are very complicated and stuff. Also because generally users are dumbasses who don't do even the most basic of troubleshooting themselves before deciding that their computer is broken and needs a rocket scientist's insight to repair.

Like if you work in IT at all, you'd be painfully familiar with the kind of customer who thinks he's above the basic troubleshooting, but also gets annoyed when you start talking technical at him, like you're supposed to be a fucking mindreader who understands his particular level of savvy. The very fact that PC literate nerds tend to be the opposite of tactful but also the only people skilled to do that particular work is the very reason I have a job. Takes a special kind of brain to be able to intimately understand SQL, and not usually the kind of brain that is good at picking up on social etiquette.

Also, if you spend a lot of time fixing PCs, you give up on being tactful and start focusing on being efficient. And the most efficient way to tackle those kinds of problems is to eliminate as many questions as possible.
