It's supposed to happen around 2pm here in New York. Will it be completely dark out then? Since the sun is covered?

At first I thought it happened at night, but hence solar and not lunar...

No. not in new york.

The total solar eclipse is a very thin range band that goes from the northwest to the southeast.

It will get "darker" but about only one half the sun will be eclipsed in New York.

If you want to see a total solar eclipse, you'll have to drive down to the northeast corner of GA or southern edges of the carolinas.

You'll get an apocalypse all right, but it won't have anything to do with the eclipse.
