But they just feel way to basic, plain and downright fan servicey now. It feels like the directors are just pandering to the most popular fan theories and everyone is wanking off to the hype.

I liked when Game of Thrones was unexpected and all these clever side plots were happening and the grand scheme of things were massive.

The new episodes are entertaining but I can't help but feel like it's just lame now. It started going downhill when they ran out of books to copy IMO

There aren't even 10 episodes left to wrap up everything that remains in the show. Someone needs to end up on the throne and the dead army needs to be vanquished with some amount of closure. In addition to that remaining side plots need to be finished (someone get Bronn a fucking castle already). Not really much time for side plots anymore.

I find the fault more with Martin. He stretched out a story that only had enough legs for three books to seven books. Then he got old.

I'm way behind.

Isn't the story still mandated by what is written in the books?

No, after fifth season they are working on outlines given by Martin

Well ... that sounds like an absolute recipe for disaster.

He hasn't written the books yet (and IMO probably never will) so this is the only way it can go forward

I know, there is just no way that a writer could give an outline to a director who would perfectly carry out the vision of the original writer, especially when that director answers to a board of directors.

I don't care about the "vision" as long as it is entertaining in its own right. Sometimes film and TV adaptions can get too caught up in following the story as scripture and turn out a terrible product. The problem with Game of Thrones is that the creators are good at making minor changes and merging storylines, but when they act as creators and not editors, they just fall back onto fanservice. I suspect it is exactly because of their insecurity with "not following the vision" that in the absence of that, they just have to please the fans. But to me that makes the show really boring, and worse than if they asserted their own visions.

Yeah it's utter crap now, I'm so disappointed by every episode on how simple they make everything, they destroy all the characters to make things that don't make sense only to use them to push their plot ahead.
Yeah it's entertaining, some scenes look fucking amazing, but it's just a mere shell of itself in the context of the story.

I think my post would be better read as tone instead of vision. If it changes genres and tone and all that, it's bound to lose its old fanbase and possibly gain an entirely different one. It's just, a recipe for disaster, like I said.

I'm not sure if that's what is going on now or not, but it does give me pleasure that what I saw happening in season 4 is finally becoming obvious to the fans still sticking around.
