Anyways:

Why aren't prisoners paying for their own prison stays?

Again, it's not "more valuable." There's almost zero value to staying in a prison, beyond basic shelter and medical needs.

They sometimes do get stuck paying for the time they were in prison, which is a fucking stupid policy that has no place in a civilized society.

Fastest way to get Mexico to start enforcing the border is to send murders, rapists, drug dealers, etc, from our prisons across the border into their country >_> You'd have a wall up in a week.

Are we comparing cost of housing a prisoner to tuition at Harvard?

I assumed that was the intent of the original topic. However, Lokarin has conflated the terms "valuable" and "expensive" which don't mean the same thing. There are plenty of expensive things which aren't necessarily valuable and plenty of valuable things which aren't necessarily expensive.

In general, prison has a negative value for its participants since even being homeless gives you a better chance at employment than being an ex-con. Plus cons and ex-cons lose the right to vote, to own guns, are more likely to be found guilty of a crime, and a million other detriments. That's in addition to having a 66% chance of being raped if you're a guy. Unlike college campuses, rape culture is actually a real thing in prisons.

Source? The numbers I've seen range from 5% to 25%.

25% is the forcible rape statistic, but when you include the coerced sex -- ie, violence to force people into a relationship -- that number gets even higher (ranging from another 25-50%). As for the alleged 5-8%, that's based on self-reported numbers from FEDERAL prisons including minimum security installations as opposed to state prisons which tend to be more violent. Also, for the federal surveys, I *think* those might have also been mixed gender and the rape numbers are far lower in female prisons.

Ya, the conceit is that prison is costing taxpayers more than it costs to go to harvard - and in the original topic I made that comment that the government could save money by sending prisoners to school.

You're not even from or living in the states, why do you give a fuck anyways?

well... yeah. prison is 24/7 housing, food, medical care, clothing, and like literally everything. going to harvard is just tuition and books, and maybe room and board depending on how you're calculating cost.

The government would also save money if all our food inspectors, water testers, nuclear facility overseers, etc, worked as meter maids. Also disastrous for the country, mind you.

At any rate, your plan wouldn't even work out because it would just make tuition rates skyrocket so the overall cost to the government would be far higher than it is now.

I care about everyone. A higher educated population is better for everyone.

it would just make tuition rates skyrocket

If it did so, then prison would become cheaper again

Not really, no. Also the other issue is that giving a free college education to criminals would encourage crime. The number of sentencings would probably increased tenfold and bankrupt the US, after which our criminals would have to go to another nation. Luckily, Canada is nearby.

I could interpret that as some sort of threat/warning, but I'm actually for buying your prisoners so they can get better care.
