I turned up the difficulty to blood and broken bones because my cousin recommended doing that. It seemed like an appropriate level of difficulty to me. Properly leveled up and with the right preparations, I could still handle everything within my level range. Maybe try that, it may force you to learn some of the other game mechanics.

Overall though yes I agree. I like being rewarded for having the right timing, which the Witcher 3 doesn't really do. It's all about having the proper tools to take down your opponent, and when you have that you can just hack and slash.

I feel like that was a lot of why I didn't like it, other than the total lack of either direction or exploration.

It's Sisyphean in a way. You make occasional spurts of simplistic effort as you chase down a target, but half of it is simply mashing the button and contemplating what you could be doing instead.
