It can only be played like one when under a very specific set of rules.

That doesn't mean it's a bad game or that it isn't competitive though.

I don't get why Smash players get so hung up over being accepted in the FGC. Their community is massive and could easily stand on its own feet.

I commentated college sports for years and I never bitched for more than I was paid because I appreciated the opportunity

It's a platformer with fighting game elements, much like when an FPS uses RPG leveling systems. The core objective of the game is to stay on top of a platform.

You're right about that because the core gameplay wouldn't be completely changed. Look at Street Fighter x Tekken with its gems.

there are flat stages, though, which basically have the same function as something like Virtua Fighter, where you lose by ring out.

I don't think it's a fighting game, but people really feel the need to label it under some kind of genre. For that reason it's just easier to consider it a fighting game than not. Because it doesn't actually matter either way.
