China doesnt want US taking over n korea and unifying the entire peninsula. That would be horrible from their perspective. So they have interest in stopping US.

True that, but a conflict with the US would be much worse for them.

If NK actually attacks an American territory, we'd be pretty much obligated to counterattack.

It is not so important that it is American soil or even American lives as much as responding to the nuclear question. North Korea has launched missiles near Japan (far more strategically important than Guam) with no response. But a nuclear weapon, yeah there is no place in this world for a government that launches offensive nuclear wars.

No offense, but your'e wrong. Don't bother bringing up the flood of Korean refugees that they would have to deal with, a war with America would be 100 times worse for their economy then even millions of refugees would be. And trust me, their economic health is their #1 priority.

No, you're wrong. China has to defend North Korea, because going back on well established promises can have very negative repercussions diplomatically. Would you want to be allied to a nation that will turn on you in a heartbeat? So right now, they're assured that the US won't do anything too stupid, while they hope the DPRK doesn't do anything stupid. Which is a LOT to hope for since they made a reputation of throwing tantrums for aid. So now China has to hope fallout doesn't rain on them because they're stuck next to a petulant toddler who is going after someone who doesn't take shit.

You're wrong, China can't take sides against us. Why? China had a 309 billion dollar trade surplus with the US last year, and their economic health depends on every dollar worth of trade with the US. And as for NK doing anything "stupid" as you say, their tantrums are just their way of extracting concessions from the international community, that and keeping their population placated. They aren't suicidal, they just want to hold on to power, and the easiest way for them to loose it would be for them to attack another nation.

Still though, I wonder if his ego and lack of sanity could push cause them to attack

China would never attack us.

They have told North Korea they'll defend them, so they'll defend them. One reason it was thought WWI couldn't happen was that the world's economy was so tangled between nations, you couldn't attack one nation without hurting yourself, so no one would start a war. World War I happened anyway.

China said they would defend them if we hit first. China also said they would be neutral if NK hit first.

Yeah, that's probably the best interpretation of their agreement that they can get. It's a defense pact so they'll defend them from aggression. No jump in to save their stupid asses.

I seriously doubt that China wants to get in a nuking contest with the US. They might get pissed and stop trade or some shit like that, but they're not going to risk genocide over fucking KJU acting like a child.

If NK actually hits Guam, then yes. If they purposefully hit the water, then it's just a bunch of bullshit sabre rattling.

Define "the water" because water up to a certain distance out belongs to the country that owns the land. And you also have to consider that if they get a near miss, would they claim they intentionally missed for propaganda? Given all the shit North Korea spews, I think they would.

This also makes me wonder what happens if they unintentionally hit

Actually, if everything we believe about their missile tech is accurate, they'd be more likely to hit if they were trying not to hit. Really, anything in Guam's territorial waters could be considered a strike on Guam itself though.
