Kotick introduced a bunch of corporate suits into vidya industry. While 90s had EA and Eidos rampant idiocy, Kotick basically "invented" all the crap that is cancer of vidya nowdays or at least laid fundation for it. The fact he and his guys had experience in packaged goods before going into vidya industry only makes it worse, because we are not talking about corporate suits that had experience in entertainment, electronics or anything like that. Nope, a bunch of high-end warehouse clerks started to run the business.

And all they've cared about was that the package they are selling will make maximum profit at absolutely no risk, without knowing jack shit about the whole industry, audiences or gaming in general.

Also, his actions are responsible for massive consolidations, buyouts and turning the industry into few monster-size mega companies with series of mergers and after that indie devs, with absolutely nothing in-between.

Imagine your grandmother suddenly being made a CEO of any given vidya company and entrusted full power over the products they make. That's about what Kotick did on a massive scale.

Games published by activision were designed to create huge pre-order numbers and then decimate their own userbase by splitting the community up as much as possible while milking them for as much as possible at every stage to ensure as few people as possible would stick around with the preceding game upon the release of its sequel.

But at least they'd have SOME knowledge of the industry, the cancerous mega corporation mentality in big publishers today stems from Kotick, before him everyone running game companies had experience with the industry in some way, but Kotick was just some CEO from some packaged goods company who took over Activision and spread the message that these companies were ripe for rhe picking for his buddies in the packaged goods industry now today most if not all big publishers are headed by some suit with zero real knowledge of the industry and it showals

The consumer didn't have to buy shitty licensed games. The consumer didn't have to every single ip that was milked to death. The consumer also didn't have to purchase the next installments of series that were developed after they were acquired by Activision, thus incentivising them to continue the practice with studio after studio.

The funny thing is I'm not taking the side of either. Both the consumers and Bobby Kotick receive their own share of the blame for the state of the industry, but Kotick is the only one I really can't be mad at. Unlike the consumers, Bobby Kotick was just looking out for the best interest of him and his shareholders. I can understand the reason why he would pump out soulless iteration after iteration of franchises he's butchered; cause it made him and his shareholders pretty freaking wealthy. What I can't understand is why you, ZP, would sit there and acknowledge tm how harmful those businesses practices are for the consumers and defend your right to fuck yourself over by buying the games anyways.
