I'm having trouble getting into Twilight Princess, it's just not very imaginative. Wind Waker has been my favorite Zelda game because it was so creative, you never knew what was next.

But despite having over 90% on metacritic I don't see many good reviews of Skyward Sword.

Most of the bad reviews say:

1) the controls suck. Who cares if the controls suck if it's a good game?

2) It's very linear. Is it?

3) there's not much to do in the overworld. Is there anything to do in OoT's overworld? I really liked that game still

So why do you hate SS?

1) The controls can be a little choppy, but mostly ok.
2) It's pretty linear. If you enjoyed the openness of Wind Waker, you might be disappointed.
3) Fits in with 2.

My largest gripe with the game is its insistence on telling you every little thing that is going on.

There's a lot of padding. Particularly involving a certain water dragon.

Sometimes good games have sucky controls but this is usually factored into the game itself, such as Octodad.

Skyward Sword is, however, a regular 3D Zelda game... but with sucky controls. See: Why people hated Phantom Hourglass / Spirit Tracks. Same deal but for 2D Zelda.

Zelda games have all been super super Linear since OoT, a trend which was shaken a little in Majora's Mask, but ultimately went solidly linear in every game thereafter until A Link Between Worlds. Later Breath of the Wild would get released and changed everything.

OoT was also a bad game, but I have a hard time convincing people to take off the nostalgia goggles. For starters, OoT didn't really have an overworld. Hyrule Field was inflated to be artificially large so you had a wide open area to ride Epona around. That was basically it. There is no other "Overworld" in the sense that other games have them. The regions in OoT have more in common with Super Mario 64 than they do with a game like Elder Scrolls.

Imagine a game that is exactly opposite of BotW, and you have SS.

I think SS is a pretty good game, but it's in a style that isn't especially fun for me, and Fi kinda ruins everything.

I played all of these games for the first time this year so I don't have any nostalgia, and I thought OoT was really great. It's 20+ years old simple, but somehow had an amazing atmosphere and rewarding combat.

Skyward Sword is my favorite Zelda game after OoT (haven't played BotW yet). I thought it was fantastic. I played through it, oblivious to the apparently popular online opinion that it's bad. Browsing the internet one day I started seeing that a lot of people hated it. I don't get it.

Honestly, I think it's one of those mob mentality things. Jump on the hate train! Fail to form your own opinion because you don't want to be left out of hating something with everyone else.

i got tired of it because of how repetitive it felt. i kept being told to revisit places i'd been already, sometimes more than once. i also got really tired of wailing my arm around like a dummy every time i wanted to attack, that shit was not fun or engaging or anything positive.

Cool atmosphere, sure, but rewarding combat? Come on.

There was very little combat at all. Most fights are 1 vs 1, tons of enemies are literally stationary. Most dungeons only had a few enemies in a room at one given time. And the bosses are little puzzles where you literally incapacitate them with the Item of the Day and then swing a sword at some weak spot while the boss has no way to retaliate.

Only the 2D games + Breath of the Wild had any kind of actually rewarding combat. The fights vs Darknuts and Aerolfos in Twilight Princess were also fun, but there was like 5 of each in the whole game. and most of them were in the pit of trials.

Controls work about 95% of the time, which isn't good enough because those times they don't work as intended are annoying.

It's very linear, yeah, and basically all the side-quests, which are few, are all in the main city.

What annoyed me the most was useless padding though. Some things just take too long and Link's companion is by far the most annoying of any other zelda game.

I guess I just found it felt good to hit stuff in the game, nothing felt like a bullet sponge

I haven't played any 2D zelda games, what's the best one?

The best one is A Link Between Worlds, but IMO you should start with Link's Awakening

Darknuts in Wind Waker are some fun times, especially in multiples.

The only game where Darknuts weren't fun to mess with, was LOZ

A Link to the Past is usually considered the best 2D one. Also my favorite Zelda overall. Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons are outstanding as well. Link's Awakening is another one that's considered to be one of the best. That's likely going to be the next Zelda game I play as well. And Minish Cap is a solid game. Probably my least favorite Zelda game of the ones I've played, but it is by no means bad.

Oh yeah there's also A Link Between Worlds. I think it's another very good one, but for me it's probably somewhere around the bottom tier along with Minish Cap. I think because I played A Link to the Past for the first time only a few months prior to playing ALBW, that game just felt too similar. And I think Link to the Past simply did it all better. And while I do like the ability to do dungeons in any order, it came at the cost of being able to get all the items almost immediately. Having to get an item from a dungeon to progress through it is one of my favorite parts of Zelda.

Honestly Dark Nuts in LoZ don't have any special loot or anything. 9 times out of 10 you are just wasting resources / hearts you might need for a boss by trying to kill them. I just avoid them unless you have to kill them all for some reason.

Or once I've got the wand and book it's easy to kill them from a distance.

trying to sword fight them takes forever and they have a penchant to suddenly turn and run face first into you which fucking hurts.

Using the terrain against them helps, until there's a room where the "terrain" is the two fireball launchers in the middle.
