I always liked to think neither were The Thing. The idea that the two of them are sitting there just a twitch away from killing each other when they're both still human fits the movie pretty well.

Neither is the Thing. Childs ends up freezing to death and MacReady escapes. This is established by the video game, which is considered canon.
