solar eclipse?

I always heard as a kid you need to use those dopey solar viewers to look at them, but it never really came into play until now cuz of the looming eclipse in a few weeks. Like, if you look at it for like 8 seconds and go "Oh that's kinda neat", is that really gonna do any noticeable damage? Or is it like one of those things where if you do it over and over and over for many years, it might damage them?

Cuz I've looked directly at the sun a couple times in my life by accident, and my eyes lived to tell the story.
