scared/intimidated to fire a certain employee?

I was just wondering since I used to work for UPS as a package handler(for a year) and I've had one co-worker who only been working for 1 month and a half(I've had 6 months in working for this job at the time) and had mediocre performances(by UPS standards) for not following safety procedures while not going as fast as humanly possible(which is a near impossible task). UPS has this 3 month probation period they put on new hires before they eventually get Union protection from management. Some of the supervisors and the center manager wanted to fire him but couldn't since they're too intimidated by him and fear for their lives that they'll set him off by firing him and he'll snap at them.

This co-worker of mine is a big Polynesian dude(I think he's Tongan), who stands 6'5 tall and appears to weigh over 270lbs (he's a bit chubby but still very muscular and has the bicep size that's almost bigger than my head) and has a scary reputation of beating the shit out of a group of 3 ex high school football players (who were older and bigger than him) all at once(and had one of them sent to the hospital) in his high school years and one of the supervisors happened to have went to the same high school as him at the same time period by coincidence. That, plus he once flipped out at the supervisors (screamed at them loud enough for the whole UPS work center to hear) at work for constantly harassing him for not meeting their unrealistic work expectations, then everyone(including the supervisors) in the center just stopped working and stayed quiet for a several minutes.

That's the reason why management at my work is too scared shitless to fire him before he becomes a Union member and protected from management harassment, lol.

Ever had work at a job with a similar situation like this?
