I always thought skeletons were supposed to be pretty weak. Like maybe stronger than a slime or a bat, but lower than a poison mushroom. But the other day I was playing a game and the skeleton killed me in two hits. I thought that was surprisingly strong. I usually consider skeletons to be "small-fry" enemies, but I'm not sure if that's just me.

It's like if I was making a game skeletons would definitely be a low tier enemy. I don't get why skeletons are supposed to be scary anyway. They're just bones.

Why is the skeleton animated? It's clearly not alive through normal means. Ergo, you can't kill it like you would kill, say, a person.

I think skeletons are generally supposed to be the lowest tier of 'serious' enemy. So you've got your rats and slimes who are basically just speedbumps, and then the skeletons who are still weak, but can pose a threat if you're not ready yet.

Base form skeletons are weak early game things, but there are often stronger variations of them that pop up later. Like skeleton sorcerers that wield death magic or skeleton archers with poison tipped arrows.

well yeah, it's just an example of how a typically weak enemy can be made strong based on the design (ex. bigger/thicker bones = more durability)

A skeleton is usually the most basic form of undead, resurrected from the bones of those that have been dead for a long time.

Animating bones probably requires less magical energy than animating muscle does, like controlling a puppet is easier than controlling an animatronic (maybe)

Age old bones are probably more fragile than rotting flesh (which is why zombies tend to be the next step up)

The way Dark Souls rebalances it is that it makes skeletons easy to re-reanimate and so they can be an endless force if you aren't using a divine weapon or haven't killed the nearest necromancer.

That being said, the more armor and clothing a skeleton is wearing, the more threatening they tend to be, so yeah.

I don't think of skeletons as hard enemies, but as always, there are games that buck the trend.

They run the gamut. In early Castlevania they could be extremely evasive with hard-to-avoid projectiles, but in SotN-type Castlevania they're among the weakest.

I usually expect skeletons to be a mid-low tier type of enemy. Like others have mentioned the more clothes it has on the more powerful I expect it to be.

I mean in the first game Stalfos were pretty dang weak. I bet that helped color my perception of skeletons. I probably fought Stalfos before I even saw a skeleton in a movie or as a Halloween decoration.
