I was riding to the bus station after work. I decided to cut through a parking lot where two police cars were sitting, and shortly after I passed them I heard their siren chirp.

Two officers patted me down and checked my backpack, and were generally acting kind of cocky. They asked what I was doing, and I told them I was just getting off work. They asked where I worked, and when I told them BK, they said "what do you do there?" It took me a moment to answer, just because it was such an unexpected question under the circumstances.

They said there was a lot of heroin traffic at the nearby Burger King (that's not the one I work at), then after looking me up for a few minutes, they said I couldn't cut through the parking lot and let me go.

There wasn't a single bit of that that was necessary. They could have just said that from the get-go, and one look could have told them I wasn't trouble. My backpack just had my work shirt and some freaking Jolly Ranchers; I was wearing a damn shirt that I got at an anime convention.

i think no cutting through a parking lot is cop code for fuck off because...is it really illegal?

it is not. the owner of the lot can post signs up saying you aren't allowed to, and then you could get charged with trespassing, but otherwise no.

I wouldn't have even said that. I'd have just asked what the problem is and that's that.

Frankly I don't like to push my luck with police. Especially since I live in the town where Terence Crutcher was killed.
