to be fair that idea was pretty much just applied on the titanic and may well have been a misinterpretation by the crew, many of whom misunderstood and thought 'women and children ONLY', resulting in half-full lifeboats being released in fear that they wouldn't all get out before the ship went down

typically on a sinking ship, some measure of panic ensues and men are the most likely survivors due to our higher average strength
